Cargo Worthy 20ft Shipping Container, Used Dry Van with CSC Plate

A cargo worthy 20ft shipping container is a used box that has been surveyed and passed as fit to carry freight again, and the CSC plate on the door is the paperwork that proves it. That is the difference between this unit and a storage-grade container. Same steel, same 20ft x 8ft footprint, but an inspection behind it that a shipping line, port or freight forwarder will accept. These are genuine ex-shipping line dry vans, guaranteed structurally sound and wind and watertight, built from Cor-Ten steel throughout. At $1,534, the certification costs a good deal less than most buyers expect it to.

When the CSC Plate Actually Matters

  • Shipping goods overseas in a container you own rather than renting one per voyage
  • One-way moves where the container travels with the load and stays at the far end
  • Rail and intermodal movements that require a valid plate
  • Buyers who want documented proof of a structural inspection, not a seller’s opinion
  • Resale later on, since a plated container appeals to a wider set of buyers
  • Mixed use, shipping now and storage afterward, without buying two containers
  • Storage buyers who simply want the better graded of the two used options

If the container will never leave your yard, a wind and watertight unit does the same storage job for less money and there is no sense paying for the plate. The case for cargo worthy is either that you intend to ship, or that you want an independent grading standard sitting behind the purchase. Compared with a one trip container, this one costs a fraction and gives up appearance rather than capability, so expect honest dents, scrapes and mismatched paint from a working life at sea. Compared with renting a container for a single export move, buying a plated unit often lands close to the same number and leaves you owning the box at the end of it. Grading is not a warranty of appearance, and it is not permanent either. A CSC plate carries an inspection date, and a container that passes today will need re-inspection eventually if it stays in the shipping cycle. For a buyer loading one export and then parking the box, that rarely matters.

Build and Fittings

The shell, roof and door structure are Cor-Ten weathering steel, which develops a tight surface oxide instead of shedding rust in layers. The floor is 28mm marine plywood laid over steel cross members, sound enough for palletized freight and forklift traffic inside the box. Both doors carry two locking bars, giving four points of engagement across the rear of the container, and vents in the upper side walls keep air moving so a sealed steel box does not sweat onto your cargo. Internally a standard 20ft dry van runs roughly 19ft 4in long by 7ft 8in wide with about 7ft 10in of headroom, and the door aperture is a little under 7ft 8in across.

Two forklift pockets on each side allow short repositioning moves without a crane, provided the machine on site has the reach and the capacity for a loaded 20ft. Corner castings are the standard ISO fittings, so the container works with twist locks, spreader bars and a container chassis. Cosmetic condition varies from unit to unit at this grade, and we confirm the exact specification, plate status and condition of the container allocated to your order before delivery. If you have a survey date requirement tied to an export booking, tell us early so we can match a suitable unit to it. It is also worth checking with your carrier before you book. Lines and forwarders apply their own acceptance criteria on top of the plate, and confirming that in advance is easier than unloading a container that has been turned away.

Delivery, Payment and Ordering

Delivery is a flat $550 anywhere in the continental United States, quoted at checkout, generally one to three weeks from order. Containers arrive on a tilt-bed truck, which slides the box off rather than lifting it, so allow around 60ft of straight, firm approach for a 20ft unit and roughly 14ft of overhead clearance at the placement point. A 20ft will fit sites a 40ft simply cannot reach. Pay by Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, Apple Pay or Google Pay through Stripe, or by bank transfer using ACH or wire. We do not collect sales tax. Standard unmodified containers can be returned within 30 days with free return shipping. Placing it on firm, level ground keeps the doors aligned, since a container racked on soft ground develops stiff doors inside a season.
