Wind and Watertight Used 40ft Container for Sale, Standard Height
A wind and watertight used 40ft container for sale is the cheapest secure storage per square foot that exists, and this standard-height unit is a straightforward example of it. Outside it measures 40ft by 8ft by 8ft 6in (12.19 m x 2.44 m x 2.59 m); inside you get 39ft 4in of length, 7ft 9in of width and 7ft 10in of height (12.00 m x 2.35 m x 2.39 m). The end doors open 7ft 8in wide by 7ft 6in high, and the container weighs about 7,540 lb (3,420 kg) empty. Every unit is checked by our technical team and sold wind and watertight, at $1,545 while current stock lasts. Grading on used containers moves week to week, so the unit we describe to you on the phone is the unit that turns up on the truck.
What a 40ft container gets used for
- Bulk site storage on construction, civils and demolition jobs
- Farm storage for feed, fencing, machinery and seasonal equipment
- Warehouse overflow, archive and slow-moving stock
- Securing plant and tools on unmanned or remote sites
- Household and commercial storage during a move or a rebuild
- Long runs of racking for parts, timber, pipe and long materials
- Donor shell for a workshop, garage or conversion project
- Secure lock-up at a contractor yard or rural property
The honest comparison is against renting storage. A rented unit costs the same every month forever and gives you nothing at the end; a bought container is paid for once, sits on your own ground, and holds resale value for years. Against a new or one trip 40ft, you are trading appearance for money, and for storage that is usually the right trade. Against two 20ft containers, a single 40ft gives you more internal length for less total cost, though it needs a much longer approach for delivery, so the site decides that one rather than the price list. Worth considering as well is the 40ft high cube, which adds a foot of internal height for a modest premium and earns it if you intend to stack high or convert the container later. For boxed and palletized goods, the standard height here does the job for less money.
Condition, structure and what used actually means
These are ex-shipping line containers, which means they have spent years at sea and look it. Expect surface rust, dents, scrapes, patchy paint and the ghost of a previous operator’s markings. What they do not have, because our technical team checks each one, is a hole, a failed weld or a door that will not seal. Wind and watertight is a working standard, not a cosmetic one: it means your contents stay dry and the doors close properly. If the container will be visible from a house or a customer entrance, plan on painting it, and price that in from the start.
Structurally these are Corten steel throughout, the weathering grade that forms a stable surface layer instead of rusting through, which is why a container from the 1990s is still a serviceable box today. The floor is 1-1/8 in (28 mm) marine plywood on steel cross members and will take pallet and forklift loads. Exterior hinged double doors at one end carry two locking bars each, and four vents are fitted along the sides. Those vents matter more than people expect, because a sealed steel box in a climate with big day-to-night swings will sweat; keep goods off the floor, leave air space at the walls and the vents will do the rest. Condition varies from unit to unit, so we confirm the grade and any notable marks on the container allocated to your order before delivery. If a conversion is in your plans, bear in mind that cutting openings into the side walls takes strength out of the structure and needs framing to put it back.
Delivery, access and payment
Delivery is a flat $550 anywhere in the continental United States, quoted at checkout, and usually one to three weeks from order. Access is the part to get right with a 40ft: allow 100 to 120ft of straight, firm approach for the tilt-bed truck plus about 14ft of overhead clearance, and check gate widths, tight turns, soft verges and overhead cables before the day. Set the container on ties, blocks or slabs at the corners so it sits level and drains, and decide which end the doors should face, because turning a 40ft container later means hiring a machine. Payment is by Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, Apple Pay or Google Pay through Stripe, or bank transfer by ACH or wire. We do not collect sales tax. Standard unmodified containers carry our 30-day return with free return shipping. Stock at this price moves, so call to check what is on the ground today.
